OUR STORY
MARIA E MARTIN
PRESIDENT & CEO
It is my pleasure to share this note with you. I have been a resident of Virginia since 1993 and of Prince William County since 1994. I have witnessed many changes in our state over the past 30-plus years. In fact, some of these changes inspired me to found “Mind the Environment Inc.”
While we have made progress and experienced growth in areas such as education, health, technology, and transportation, mental health has declined tremendously. Before the pandemic in 2019, one in two American adults reported experiencing loneliness. (Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, 19th and 21st Surgeon General of the United States, in his book “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation,” 2023).
As of 2023, 80% of the population under 18 years of age reported feeling lonely and isolated. (https://www.rootsofloneliness.com). In 2021, I saw a young man, between 15 and 17 years old, walking on Graham Park Rd. in Dumfries, VA, drunk and holding a paper bag that concealed a bottle of liquor. It was then that I began developing a way to help our younger generation and communities combat loneliness and isolation, by creating the right environment to connect with people and nature. Community gardens will bring out the best in all of us.
Please join us in our endeavor; we need volunteers and your support because the future is here. (info@environmentminded.org)
